I love dice. This does not make me an outlier in the ttrpg-sphere, if I understand my social media feeds and meme collection correctly. I also have too many dice. I bet I haven’t even used a whole bunch of them. Bought them, threw them in the box/sack/cabinet and there they are, deteriorating, maybe losing some randomness by just compressing under the weight of a metal dice set, or just gravity dragging it towards the shelf. But I’m gonna rant about that, instead I’ll just talk about the best dice.

D12 – the best dice

Seriously, there is no dice better than the d12.

The d2 is just a coin, and can be emulated by any other dice in more satisfying way.

A d4 is just a pyramid sliding down the table. There is no die that is less rewarding to roll, unless you manage to hit that sweet spot where it lands on the top of a the pyramid, bouncing all around, and producing a result that feels more random than usual.

The d6 is the most boring dice there is. A cube. Unsatisfactory rolling style. Everyone knows what it is, just say dice and you even your uncultured swine of a cousin will identify a d6. Just seriously boring all around, unless in a large enough quantity.

With the d8, we’re starting to get somewhere. A satisfying roll, a curious shape, and a result that almost reaches 10! A bit underused, though.

A d10 is close to perfection, but I really do prefer them in pairs. a good d% roll is satisfying, you’re sure on the % odds, and the numbers go high!

The d20 is just… Meh. Almost a ball. I’ll give it that it has a really good roll, but that’s it.

The d12 combines the best parts of all the other dice. It has a great rolling ability, a good bounce, and a pleasant shape. It does a great job emulating a d4 and a d6, making both of them superfluous. The numbers goes to the double digits, but not too far into the double digits that it feel ridiculous. In short, more systems should use the d12, to make everyone enjoy their dice rolling more.
